Stucco Cost Per Sq Ft Calculator
Enter your exterior wall area and instantly estimate stucco installation or repair cost.
Stucco is a durable, low-maintenance exterior finish that is extremely popular in the Southwest and warmer climates — and it has been making a comeback in other regions due to its versatility and longevity. Understanding the cost per sq ft before hiring a plastering contractor helps you evaluate quotes and spot outliers. Use this calculator for an instant baseline estimate.

How much does stucco cost per square foot?
Traditional 3-coat stucco installation costs $9–$16 per sq ft installed on new construction. One-coat synthetic stucco (acrylic) runs $7–$14 per sq ft. EIFS (Exterior Insulation and Finish System, or 'synthetic stucco') costs $8–$12 per sq ft but has specific moisture management requirements. Stucco repair runs $8–$50 per sq ft depending on damage extent and repair type. Painting stucco adds $3–$6 per sq ft. Always get quotes that clearly differentiate material from labour — stucco is labour-intensive and regional rates vary significantly.
Cost by project size
| Project size | Low estimate | High estimate |
|---|---|---|
| 500 sq ft | $4,000 | $8,000 |
| 800 sq ft | $6,400 | $12,800 |
| 1,200 sq ft | $9,600 | $19,200 |
| 1,500 sq ft (average home exterior) | $12,000 | $24,000 |
| 2,000 sq ft (large home exterior) | $16,000 | $32,000 |
Approximate 2026 US national averages at $8–$16/sq ft installed. Actual costs vary by location, contractor, and project complexity.
What affects construction cost per square foot?
Stucco system type
Traditional 3-coat stucco (scratch coat, brown coat, finish coat) is the most durable at $9–$16/sq ft but takes 3–5 days to cure between coats. 1-coat systems use a thicker base layer and are faster at $7–$12/sq ft. EIFS (synthetic stucco) has excellent insulating properties at $8–$12/sq ft but requires proper moisture management detailing.
Substrate preparation
Stucco requires a solid lath substrate — metal lath over sheathing, or a masonry surface. Installing metal lath and building paper on new wood-frame walls adds $1–$2/sq ft. Masonry surfaces (block, brick) are ideal stucco substrates and cost less to prepare.
Finish texture
Smooth (California) finishes require the most skill and are most expensive. Sand, dash, and Spanish lace textures are the standard for most homes. Each texture affects the amount of material used and the labour time per sq ft. Custom finishes and architectural details add significant cost.
Building height & access
One-storey homes are straightforward. Two-storey homes require scaffolding — adding $0.50–$1.50/sq ft to labour costs. High or steep-roofline areas with difficult access can add significantly more.
Repair vs new installation
Stucco repairs (cracks, delamination, impact damage) cost $8–$50/sq ft depending on severity. Small crack repairs and patching are at the low end. Full section replacement — remove lath, replace sheathing, re-lath and re-stucco — is at the high end. Matching existing texture and colour in repairs is a skilled job.
Waterproofing details
Proper moisture management at windows, doors, penetrations, and roof-wall intersections is critical for stucco longevity. Missing or improper flashing and weep screed is the primary cause of stucco failure and moisture intrusion in older installations.
Frequently asked questions
How much does stucco cost per square foot installed?
Traditional 3-coat stucco costs $9–$16 per sq ft installed. 1-coat stucco systems run $7–$12/sq ft. EIFS (synthetic stucco) costs $8–$12/sq ft. For a 1,500 sq ft home exterior, expect $12,000–$24,000 for new stucco installation. Stucco repair is typically $8–$50/sq ft depending on the extent of damage.
Is stucco a good choice for home siding?
Stucco is an excellent choice in dry and warm climates — it is extremely durable, fire-resistant, and requires minimal maintenance for 50–80 years when properly installed. In wet climates (Pacific Northwest, Southeast), stucco requires very careful moisture management detailing or it can trap water and cause wood rot and mould issues.
How long does stucco last?
Properly installed traditional 3-coat stucco lasts 50–80 years with minimal maintenance. EIFS (synthetic stucco) has a shorter track record but modern systems have performed well for 25+ years. The most common failure mode is water intrusion at penetrations and transitions — caused by improper flashing, not the stucco material itself.
Can stucco be painted?
Yes — stucco can be painted with exterior masonry paint. New stucco should cure for at least 28 days before painting. Painting stucco seals hairline cracks and refreshes faded colour — expect to repaint every 5–10 years. Use elastomeric paint for best crack coverage and moisture resistance.
What causes stucco to crack?
Hairline cracks in stucco are normal — stucco expands and contracts with temperature. Control joints should be installed every 144 sq ft to manage cracking. Structural cracks (wider than 1/4 inch, horizontal, or with displacement) indicate foundation or framing movement and need professional evaluation before repair.
