The global wealth picture

🌍

The global 1%

To be in the global top 1% requires a net worth of roughly $1 million. In the US alone, there are over 22 million millionaires — about 6.7% of the US population, and all of them are in the global top 1%.

🤝

What this means for giving

If you're in the global top 10–20%, you have significantly more capacity to donate and invest than you might feel. Even small amounts by US standards can have enormous impact globally.

📊

Relative vs absolute poverty

The World Bank defines extreme poverty as under $2.15/day. About 700 million people live below this line. Understanding global wealth distribution helps contextualise debates about inequality.

How the global percentile is estimated

Formula

Percentile = Φ( (ln value − μ) / σ ) × 100 Wealth: μ = ln(8,654), σ = 2.0 (≈ $100k → top 10%, $1M → top 1%) Income: μ = ln(3,000), σ = 1.05 (≈ $34k → top 1%)

Each rank uses a log-normal approximation of the global distribution, calibrated to published anchors from the Credit Suisse Global Wealth Report and common global income thresholds. Φ is the standard normal cumulative distribution — so doubling your wealth moves you up the curve, not linearly.

Results are nominal-USD estimates — precise per-individual global data does not exist, and Purchasing Power Parity would shift the rankings. The figures give a reasonable, well-anchored indication of your global standing.
