Vinyl Flooring Cost Per Sq Ft Calculator

Enter your room area and instantly estimate vinyl flooring cost — LVP, luxury vinyl tile, or sheet vinyl.

Vinyl flooring is the fastest-growing category in residential flooring because it solves the two problems homeowners hate: it's 100% waterproof and it can go anywhere — over concrete, in bathrooms, in basements. LVP (luxury vinyl plank) has largely replaced laminate as the go-to value pick. Use this calculator to understand exactly what you'll pay per sq ft before visiting a flooring store.

How much does vinyl flooring cost per square foot?

Sheet vinyl is the most affordable option at $1–$3 per sq ft installed — ideal for bathrooms and laundry rooms. LVP (luxury vinyl plank) averages $3–$8 per sq ft installed — the most popular all-round residential flooring choice. Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) runs $4–$9 per sq ft. Rigid core SPC vinyl costs $4–$10 per sq ft installed and is the most durable option for high-traffic areas and commercial spaces. Always order 10% extra for waste and future repairs.

What affects flooring cost per square foot?

🏷️

Vinyl type

Sheet vinyl costs $1–$3/sq ft installed and is best for wet areas. Standard LVP costs $3–$6/sq ft installed. Rigid core SPC (stone polymer composite) LVP costs $4–$10/sq ft and offers superior dent resistance and stability under temperature swings.

📏

Wear layer thickness

The wear layer determines durability. Budget LVP has a 6–8 mil wear layer — fine for low-traffic bedrooms. 12 mil is recommended for main living areas. 20+ mil is commercial-grade and lasts decades in high-traffic residential use.

🔊

Underlayment

Some LVP comes with pre-attached underlayment. Others need a separate underlayment ($0.25–$0.75/sq ft) for sound dampening and slight subfloor irregularity tolerance. Check the manufacturer spec before purchasing underlayment separately.

🔨

Subfloor preparation

LVP requires a clean, flat subfloor (within 3/16 inch over 10 feet). High spots need grinding; low spots need self-levelling compound. Preparation adds $0.50–$2/sq ft if the subfloor needs significant work.

💧

Water resistance grade

All LVP is water resistant on the surface, but not all products are waterproof through the core. SPC and WPC (wood plastic composite) cores are fully waterproof throughout the plank — important for flood-prone areas and below-grade spaces.

🔄

Old flooring removal

LVP can often be floated over existing smooth hard flooring if it is flat and firmly bonded — saving $1–$2/sq ft in removal cost. Carpet and padding must always be removed first. Check manufacturer guidelines for acceptable substrates.

Frequently asked questions

How much does LVP flooring cost per square foot installed?

LVP (luxury vinyl plank) flooring costs $3–$8 per sq ft all-in including supply, underlayment, and installation. Budget LVP starts around $2–$4/sq ft. Premium rigid core SPC LVP runs $5–$10/sq ft installed. For a 600 sq ft main living area, expect $1,800–$4,800.

Is LVP better than laminate?

LVP is 100% waterproof and can go in bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. Laminate is not waterproof and will swell if moisture gets under the planks. LVP is also slightly softer underfoot. Laminate tends to feel and sound more like real wood. For moisture-prone areas, LVP wins clearly — in dry areas, it's a personal preference.

How long does vinyl plank flooring last?

Budget LVP with a 6–8 mil wear layer lasts 10–15 years under normal residential use. Mid-range 12 mil LVP lasts 15–25 years. Commercial-grade 20+ mil SPC flooring lasts 25+ years. Proper installation over a flat subfloor is the biggest factor in how long vinyl flooring holds up.

Can vinyl flooring be installed in a basement?

Yes — LVP is one of the best flooring choices for basements. Its waterproof core handles moisture from the slab better than wood or laminate. Use a floating installation (not glue-down) to allow for seasonal movement. Ensure the slab is dry before installation and use a moisture barrier if needed.

Is vinyl flooring the same as linoleum?

No — vinyl and linoleum are different products. Vinyl is a synthetic petroleum-based product. Linoleum is made from linseed oil, wood powder, and other natural materials — it's more eco-friendly but less water-resistant. Modern LVP is far more durable and water-resistant than either old-style sheet vinyl or linoleum.
